Bedford Amateur Regatta

Kingston led the senior events, with four victories, but lost to Christ Church, Oxford, in the Senior 1 Eights. Christ Church also won the College Eights.

Eton took the junior crown with seven victories. But Radley, with only three, had the satisfaction of winning the top Junior Eights and Junior Fours.

Balliol won Senior 3  and Womens Senior 4 Eights, and Haberdashers Monmouth excelled at Womens J14 Octuples for both first and second crews

Osiris dominate Wallingford Regatta

Osiris, Oxford University women, won five events at the 56th Wallingford Regatta, taking the senior 2 & 3 eights, the senior 2 & 3 coxless fours and the senior 3 coxed four.  Coach Andy Green recently joined from Headington School.

The event was at Dorney Lake, location for last year's world championships and venue for London's Olympic regatta in 2012.

More than 2,000 athletes and 600 crews took part: a further 300 crews had to be turned away.

Overseas entries included 21 crews from two Irish clubs, newcomers Muckross and Killorglin. Marine Technical University, St. Petersburg, Russia also competed.

The Regatta's instant phone-in results service shows Molesey BC had 45 entries - one, the winning Elite Coxless Four, with two Olympians!

Storm Clouds Clear at Evesham

Heavy rains cast doubts over Saturday's Evesham Regatta, which only cleared Friday lunchtime when the go-ahead was given.

With one eye on the weather, the organisers replaced the 1000 metre upstream course with the Sunday Sprint format of 500 metres downstream.

Events had been split into morning and afternoon sessions to enable athletes to compete in more than one event, and with no further rain the regatta ran to time in ideal rowing conditions.

One of the most beautiful regatta settings, Evesham is on the Avon halfway between Stratford and Tewkesbury, where the river joins the Severn.

South Africans dash British hopes in 2004 Goblets

2004 was a pivotal year in the Silver Goblets and Nickalls Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta. Three years of victories on the bounce by Cracknell & Pinsent had lulled the Henley crowds into believing coxless pairs rowing to be a particularly British talent.

Two South Africans, Ramon di Clemente and Donovan Cech were to change that. After three years of losing, an emphatic victory was theirs. Not only that, but they were to repeat their success in 2005 and 2007. (Injury stopped them competing in 2006.)

Three years of victories is not so unusual in Henley terms. The Nickalls Challenge cup was added to the Silver Goblets in 1895 by Mr Tom Nickalls to mark the achievements of his two sons, Guy and Vivien, who won eleven victories between them in the 1890s. This record stood for a century until Sir Steve Redgrave scored his seventh Goblets win in 1995.

Whether the South Africans will compete at Henley in 2008 is unclear. For the FISA world cup in Munich, 8-11 May, di Clemente is paired with Shaun Keeling.

  Leander Head of the River

Undeterred by last year's last-minute cancellation through bad weather,
410 crews - over 60 from overseas - competed in the Head of the River
on Saturday 15 March.

With current international rowers absent for Olympic training, the event
was won by Leander Club.

Osiris win Womens Head

Starting difficulties in high March winds at Chiswick may have misled
spectators on Hammersmith Bridge into thinking [1] Thames RC's lead
unassailable in the Women's Head of the River on Saturday 1 March.

Thames finished at Putney still several seconds clear of [4] Osiris (2nd
across the line, 1st overall, 19:32.81), [3] Nottingham RC (4th) and
lightweight [2] Imperial/Jesus /London/Wallingford/Westminster (8th),
but their time of 19:46.50 dropped them to fifth place.

[34] Oxford Brookes were placed 2nd overall in 19:37.11 and [9]
Durham Unversity were 3rd in 19:38.62

Rowing History with the Personal Touch ...

The new RowTv DVD series, "The Road to Henley 2007", shows the closing stages of all races in the main Club and University events.

Available now are the Thames, Temple and Diamonds/Princess Royal DVDs. Britannia, Wyfold & Prince Albert discs are expected shortly.

All have a selection menu that groups races by day: remote control skip keys jump from race to race.  Qualifying races are included, and scenes from the course construction.

The boxed DVDs cost £16.00 each including VAT & postage.  For an additional charge, crews or clubs can have their own events accessed through a personal playlist option:  this can be extended to include earlier races from Marlow, the Metropolitan or any of the other regattas covered by RowTv. Crews' own video can also be included.

The Temple DVD (menu above) includes all 68 crews in both the 31 races and the qualifiers.  See the semis and finals here

The Diamonds DVD has all races and qualifiers, plus a link to the Princess Royal.  All DVDs in the series cost £16.00 including VAT & postage, and there is the additional option to include your own races.
See semis and finals here and here.
