Shortly after the start, number 2 in the Dutch boat lost his right scull. At the ¼ mile, he jettisoned the other one and jumped out, to be rescued by the launch. The other three continued sculling bravely, and received much applause for their effort. Maidenhead & Newark sculled well for their comfortable winSydney sculled skilfully, taking the lead and holding it in spite of spirited pressure from Tideway. Sydney won a well-judged race by two lengths

Maidenhead/Newark showed ahead by the end of the Island and gained their maximum lead at the Barrier. Sydney, sculling powerfully and well together, had the race in hand by Fawley and gave brave Maidenhead/Newark no chances
