| A fiercely contested race. The Irish quad was warned just after the Island; the British quad near the ¾ Mile. Commercial & Neptune's length and a quarter was cut back to a half length at the Mile. In the final run-in, the Irish were near the centre line. The British, in their final burst, hit the booms | Dart-Totnes moved smoothly into an early lead, rating slightly lower and sculling more solidly. Leander did not seem able to settle, and despite a courageous challenge through the latter stages could not upset the steady rhythm of their opponents |

| In spite of very poor steering over much of the course, Commercial & Neptune soon achieved and then maintained control of the race. Northwich & Dart-Totnes had little sense of urgency but at last steered well. Commercial & Neptune showed commendable fighting spirit | |
