| Abingdon led off the start, throwing everything into their effort, and drew out to ¾ length by the Barrier. At the ½ Mile, Eton mounted a sustained challenge of about 40 strokes and eventually broke through to win despite a brave counter-attack by Abingdon. A very cool, mature piece of stroking by the Eton stroke | After a fast start by both crews, St Joseph's took a quick half-length between the ¼ mile abd the barrier. They built steadily on this, though St Paul's challenged gamely, and controlled the rest of the race with confidence |

| A fine race. Eton were just ahead at the first signal but St Joseph's were level at the Barrier. Eton pushed again and held a small lead through Fawley but, approaching the Mile, Eton pushed again: this was the critical point of the race | |
